Catocala amatrix is found in North America east of the Rocky Mountains (from Oregon to Nova Scotia, and south to Arizona, Texas, and Florida); likely occurs in northern Mexico. It inhabits deciduous and mixed forest and woodlands, riverine thickets, and urban areas. A large Catocala; forewing 36-39 mm, and the wingspan 75-95 mm. The forewing is tan-gray with wavy black lines, diffuse dashes or a broad black mark across the wing. The hindwing is pinkish-red or orange-red with black bands; the fringe is yellowish-white. The larvae feed on Populus spp. and Salix nigra (Salicaceae). C. amatrix flies from August to October; single brooded.
